Rum or Rhum?

Sunset over the mountains of Rum

The largest island in the archipelago know as the Small Isles, is either spelt as Rum or Rhum. I’ve discovered these two differing spellings in a variety of different books and maps/charts of varying ages. Which is the correct one?

The owner of the island in 1900’s, Sir George Bullough changed the spelling from Rum to Rhum, as he didn’t want to be referred to as the Laird of Rum. Ironic, when he was famed for throwing wild parties at the castle on the island, which involved liberal amounts of alcoholic refreshments being served. I’m going to stick with spelling - Rum as its a name with more character and it’s what the Ordnance Survey use.

I believe “Rum” is the preferred name now, as that was the original name before Sir George Bullough changed the spelling. I think SNH are trying to encourage Rum as the correct spelling now.
