Over the sea to skye

SKYE BOAT SONG

Speed bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing
Onward, the sailors cry
Carry the lad that’s born to be king
Over the sea to Skye.

Words by Sir Harold Boulton,1884

Bonnie Prince Charlie or the ‘young pretender’ to the throne, in 1746 made the journey to Skye by ferry boat during his evasion after the defeat of the Jacobites at the Battle of Culloden. Today it’s still possible to catch a ferry over the sea to the Island of Skye either from Mallaig or Glenelg.

The Glenelg ferry is by far the more interesting and adventurous an experience, for it crosses the turbulent tidal narrows of Kylerhea and the ferry itself is a historical relic. It only operates during the summer months and it’s always interesting watching the ferry contend with the strong currents and resulting ferry glide angles it takes. Recently a community group bought the ferry and will continue to operate the ferry service.

Congratulations on getting your guidebook started. I’m sure you will find Franco and Peter excellent guys to work with on this. I feel flattered that you say it’ll be a challenge to write a book to equal the likes of mine and Andy’s work. If this project is a voyage of discovery and a labour of love it will be everything you, and the sea kayaking community hope for and more!

Hopefully we’ll get the chance to meet up sometime, perhaps on the sea.

    All the best,

    Jim Krawiecki

Thanks for your supportive words Jim. ‘Welsh Sea Kayaking’ is a hard act to follow but I’m willing to rise to the challenge.

Indeed I’m sure our paths will cross some time soon.

    Regards

    Cailean
