The Commissioners

Cailleach Head

Formed in 1786 by an act of parliament to construct four lighthouses; North Ronaldsay, Scalpay, Kinnaird Head & Mull of Kintyre, the Commissioners of the Northern Lighthouse Board have an important role in ensuring the safety of seafarers both in Scottish & Manx coastal waters.

The Northern Lighthouse Board now meets it’s important role through it’s extensive network of 215 lighthouses and 157 buoys and that’s before including the many modern electronic aids to navigation as well. Since 1997 all the buoys have been powered by solar power. Indeed the Northern Lighthouse Board have been pioneers since they were formed in 1786 through major feats of civil engineering carried out by the Stevenson dynasty of lighthouse builders and, now embracing modern and efficient technology.

They have an extensive library detailing the history and a photo of each lighthouse on their exellent website.
