Getting paid to go sea kayaking

Surely a dream come true for a sea kayaker - getting paid to paddle on the West Coast of Scotland. Besides sea kayak coaches, I know of one gentleman who gets paid to go sea kayaking.

Peter John Korbel, who works for the Crown Estate, uses his company sea kayak to carry out inspections of moorings in the various sea lochs and anchorages of the West Coast.

The Crown Estate owns the sea bed and most of the foreshore (Up to Mean Springs HW) around the UK and, so in order to place a mooring anchor/weight on it for a yacht or boat, you need a licence issued by the Crown Estate for an annual fee of £70. Mr Korbel used to use a powerboat to carry out his inspections but he worked he could save the Crown Estate money (fuel, extra member of staff & servicing), get fit and carry out his job in a more environmentally friendly way by using a sea kayak.

Do you know of anyone else who uses a sea kayak for their work on the West coast of Scotland?

This blog will keep you updated as to my progress and hopefully the blog and in turn the book will inspire you experience the Northwest Highlands by sea kayak yourself.
