HMS Helicon

Royal Navy Aultbea Base

The Highlands are a safe and relatively crime free place to live and work in. The further away from the ‘big city’ of Inverness, people become very trusting and to leave things unlocked and even open, like houses, cars and even Royal Navy bases…

This base is only used a few times a year during large scale NATO exercises now but during the 2nd World War, the base was know as ‘HMS Helicon’ - with Loch Ewe being a major anchorage and base, second only in size to Scapa Flow, Orkney in Scotland. The Royal Navy slang for shore bases is ’stone frigates’.

I have brief memories of HMS Helicon from the 1960s when I spent several weeks their on training exercises whilst with the RNVR.
Many memorable hours on exercise in the Loch plus many 2 and 3 day land exercises.
