Waiting

Arisaig Train Station

Mike and I had just paddled from Mallaig to Arisaig and were intending to use the afternoon train from Fort William to Mallaig to shuttle us back to our cars.

We had checked the timetable online and in print. We arrived in good time before the train was due to arrive and then waited a further 20 minutes before using the station phone to call the signalman in Fort William to see where the train was.

He told us Railtrack were carrying out engineering works and the line was closed for 2 weeks.

As Mike and I headed back into Arisaig we discovered a small simple sign from First Scotrail advising passengers of the engineering works. There are two paths from Arisaig village to the train station and we had taken the one without a warning notice!

Lesson learnt - always, always check on the day with a local rail station that the train is actually running before committing to use it as you’re shuttle!!!
