The district of Lochaber (Mallaig to Rannoch Moor including the Small Isles and Arisaig) was recently awarded ‘geopark’ status. This status is awarded to areas with a unique and special geology in order to protect and promote them. Lochaber’s geological history spans 1000 million years and paddler’s certainly benefit from the geology of the area in terms of the quality of the coastal landscapes.
The Far Northwest Highlands is home to Scotland’s only other geopark.
