The big one…

OS Map 9 - Cape Wrath

It’s a formidable headland exposed to swell from anywhere in the Northwest Atlantic. There’s a distinct lack of places to land amongst the large sea cliffs and swirling tides. Truth be said I’m looking forward to paddling around the Cape and getting it done. There’s something quite committing about major headlands, mentally for a sea kayaker.

The name Cape Wrath comes from the old Norse word - ‘turning point’ which is rather apt given the Vikings would have turned their longboats here to head either down into the Hebrides or back towards home in Norway. Recently a Warner Bros executive ventured  under the towering cliffs at Cape Wrath in a local boat, as it was being considered as a possible filming venue for the next Harry Potter movie.

Finally there are only two Cape’s in the British Isles - Cape Wrath and the other being in deepest Southwest England where Mark Rainsley is currently writing a sea kayaking guidebook - Cape Cornwall.

I'm currently writing a sea kayaking guidebook for the Northwest Highlands; Cape Wrath to Ardnamurchan Point including Skye & the Small Isles. This blog will keep you updated as to my progress and hopefully the blog and in turn the book will inspire you experience the Northwest Highlands by sea kayak yourself.
