R.I.P.

I read tonight in the Caithness Courier newspaper that a Fin Whale was washed up dead close to Stoer Point, near Lochinver earlier this week.

The fin whale is the second largest whale after the mighty Blue Whale and the adult female washed at Stoer was estimated to weigh in at 45 tonnes and measured 65 feet in length.

The Highland Council Ranger for the Assynt area is reported as stating the most likely cause of death was due entanglement with a deep water creel line.

A sad tale indeed. Fin whales are very rarely spotted in the waters of the Northwest Highlands however generally the sightings of whales, dolphins and porpoise’s in the region is steadily increasing year on year.

I'm currently writing a sea kayaking guidebook for the Northwest Highlands; Cape Wrath to Ardnamurchan Point including Skye & the Small Isles. This blog will keep you updated as to my progress and hopefully the blog and in turn the book will inspire you experience the Northwest Highlands by sea kayak yourself.
