Narrow

Mike gently surfing into Mallaig Harbour

Mike gently surfs a lazy swell after a long day’s paddling. However the reef on which the navigational mark is perched poses a hazard indirectly. The reef restricts the width of the entrance channel to less than a cable (tenth of a nautical mile). So making it a tad narrow for big fishing boats and Caledonian Macbrayne ferries coming in and out of the busy port of Mallaig.

There is a mast head at the end of the ferry pier (see photo below) and when three vertical red lights are shown on it, small craft including kayaks should keep clear of the narrow channel.

This blog will keep you updated as to my progress and hopefully the blog and in turn the book will inspire you experience the Northwest Highlands by sea kayak yourself.
